Project details
The Maidenhead Waterways were enlarged in the 1960s to serve as a flood defence for the town. However, following the completion of the Jubilee River in the 1990s, they became redundant and fell into neglect. In 2012, the Maidenhead Waterways Restoration Group secured planning permission for restoration works, which were delivered in partnership with the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead.
This project transformed these disused channels into a valuable amenity for boating, water-based activities, walking, and cycling. As part of the restoration, a reinforced concrete weir was constructed to lift and stabilise water levels, making the waterway navigable and accessible for recreational use.
Associated works to the weir included lining the waterway bed to connect it with previous channel works, creating wetland areas, and installing bank retention to maintain a natural edge to the waterway. The weir complex also incorporated a fish pass, an eel pass, and boat rollers.
